Four teams are already in the Champions League quarter-finals, waiting for Friday’s draw. Chelsea, Bayern, Milan, and Benfica are through. As for Napoli and Real Madrid, they have also practically clinched a spot. We’ve seen stranger things happening, but I won’t bet on Frankfurt or Liverpool upsetting the odds. It’s today’s games that are the most interesting. So let’s dive into my Champions League Predictions.
Let’s get Manchester City vs RB Leipzig out of the way. I feel City will get the win and move on, but I don’t see any real betting opportunity here. The game was left out of my Champions League predictions. It is the match between Porto and Inter Milan that I want to focus on.
The Italians won the first leg in Northern Italy. But in order to do so, the Nerazzuri had to sweat. Porto were left with ten men, when Otavio picked up a second yellow card and Inter scored the winning goal in the 86th minute. Now they are going to Northern Portugal for the second leg. And they are offered at 1.30 to qualify. That’s a 77% chance of winning.
Really, though? Are Inter so much better than Porto? What have they done away from home recently? After the World Cup break, they have played five games away from home. They barely defeated Cremonese (then at the bottom of the league), they drew against Sampdoria (again, then at the bottom of the league), they drew against Monza, and they lost to Bologna and Spezia.
I will not bite the bait. I’m backing Porto to qualify to the next phase of the Champions League.
I cannot leave you with just one pick. I’m going to the English Championship for my second prediction of the day. Middlesbrough are having a magnificent season so far and they owe that in large to Chuba Akpom. The former Arsenal man proved himself in the Greek Super League and returned to England to show what he’s made from. He has 22 goals in 29 matches this season and he always seems to find a way to send the ball in the back of the net. I cannot understand why his odds of scoring are so high.
