Three world-class midfielders head to Newcastle
Newcastle United finished fourth in the Premier League standings last season, heading to the Champions League for the first time since 2002/2003. The Magpies presented a solid roster with great individuals under the mastermind named Eddie Howe. The English manager arrived at St James Park at the beginning of the 2021/2022 season, transforming the club quickly.

Now that Newcastle achieved the step up as one of the best clubs in the Premier League, the board decided to spend big in the transfer market, in a chance to improve the roster ahead of the tougher campaign. They are looking for some great midfield additions, as Howe spotted the need to have many options in that area. Three names are already on the brink of becoming Newcastle players this summer.
James Maddison
The first name is of course Jame Maddison who couldn’t help Leicester City to avoid relegation in the Championship. The 26-year-old talented footballer wants a new challenge under a fresh environment and competing on the greatest European stage is always a plus. Luring him will not be hard as he truly wants some top-level action, just a year before Euro 2024.
The Magpies have approached Leicester in a deal that may be worth almost £50 million. They are willing to spend this amount of money, considering that there is less than a year left on the player’s contract. Tottenham’s interest could mean that both clubs may be part of a long saga – including a bidding war – something that Newcastle don’t prefer. Sandro Tonali
Newcastle are also pushing to finish the Sandro Tonali transfer, with the midfielder ready to join for £60 million. Tonali is considered one of the greatest young talents in Italy, having 14 Italy caps. He was a sensation at AC Milan in the past three years, winning the Serie A title in 2022.
The British side is confident that the deal will go through as the player has agreed on personal terms with his new club. There are still some details left to discuss, but AC Milan will not raise any obstacles to this transfer.
Felix Nmecha
Last but not least, Felix Nmecha is another name that is ready to enter St. James Park. The Premier League club is discussing a possible offer to Wolfsburg while Borussia Dortmund is still interested in his talents. A deal of around £20 million would be more than enough, for a player that Newcastle scouted more than once last season.
The 22-year-old midfielder had 30 Bundesliga appearances, scoring 3 goals providing also on 6 occasions for his teammates. There is serious interest surrounding his name, especially now that Dortmund sold Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid. It is up to Newcastle to discuss how far the team can go on this one.
All these names though state that the historic club will take next season by storm, ready to add more pieces to what Howe has in mind.
