Winning any trophy is a big deal, but when you win a tournament held for 100+ years, the same trophy gets a somewhat metaphysical virtue. Such is the case with Cheltenham Festival, one of the greatest horse racing meetings in the world. Cheltenham Festival 2022 is held, well, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, from March 15 to March 18 and it promises four days of absolutely amazing events. You can follow it live on bet365, with an exclusive offer for our readers.
It’s been two years since the Festival was held in front of a live crowd. It’s been two years since we last heard the famous Cheltenham Roar, from thousands of racing fans generating noise at the start of each race. In 2022 we’re going to experience that once again.
This Roar carries 160 years of history, as the Festival originated in the early 1860s when the National Hunt Race was first held at Market Harborough. The hurdles racing event as we know it was first held in 1907, which makes the Cheltenham Festival one of the most historic sporting events in the world. It is the Greatest Show on Turf and anyone who has attended it can confirm that claim. So wear green (don’t forget, March 17 is Saint Patrick’s Day) and enjoy.
As with the past few years, there are 28 races in Cheltenham in 2022.
Hundreds of millions of pounds are bet over the course of each year’s Festival. Most of the money is wagered on the favourites, but there are some great underdog examples. Before going through our list of bold predictions, check our Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide.
Kilcruit is found fifth on the odds list, at 15/2. But there is one important aspect here: Not only was he second in the 2021 Champion Bumper, beaten by half a length, but he also is in supreme form (won at Punchestown by 21 lengths) and is trained by one Willie Mullins, 8-time Cheltenham leading trainer. The odds are more than appealing and we could start the Festival with a bang.
The Champion Chase is day two’s feature event, and there is one outsider that could cause a major upset. Nube Negra impressed everyone by finishing the race second in 2021 and winning Shloer Chase in November, in front of Put The Kettle On and Politologue.
Once again we back a Willie Mullins’ horse. Janidil has been trained for almost two years specifically for this event and nearly won against Allaho at Punchestown last December. There is a chance for an upset here.
Trainer Dan Skelton has been outspoken about Doctor Parnassus. He believes his horse can win this Grade 1 race and the odds are pretty tempting.
The most important races of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival will be shown live, for UK viewers, on ITV’s main channel, featuring commentary from the world’s sexiest jockey, Leonna Mayor. The whole event will be broadcast on Racing TV, for those with a subscription. You can also watch the races on your device, by logging on to your account on one of the best horse racing betting sites.
