Premier League fans watch their teams spend much on almost every transfer window and the 2022/2023 was not an exemption. Chelsea took it to the next level, paying over 600 million pounds for new entries in this total rebuild. Many names failed to live up to expectations both in the league and the Blues in particular, a list of top of them is necessary to make.

Top Premier League flops
Let’s begin our current list with what we saw in the Premier League. There are many underperforming, overpriced and overpaid individuals, whose teams are ready to see them out of their turf. The top tier is full of such cases, so we collected the best of them.
5. Phillipe Coutinho – Aston Villa
Coutinho’s permanent move was followed by a successful loan at Aston Villa when he convinced everyone that he had more to offer. The Villans pulled the trigger and bought him for £20 million from Barcelona, but he was unable to be a steady part of the team at a point in time when Aston Villa fell off the cliff. He didn’t score a single goal until February’s defeat to Arsenal, but this was his last game. Emery’s arrival made him disappear for the rest of the campaign.
4. Arthur – Liverpool
This year’s midfield problems for Liverpool were known to the club since last summer. Klopp didn’t act fast and decisively in the market and signed no major target except Arthur. His loan from Juventus took every fan by storm regarding his many injuries as a Bianchonerri. And they were not wrong. He failed to make any appearance for the Reds who crawled under their roster problems through the entire season. Arthur was permanently injured and Liverpool decided not to activate his £30 million clause to make him return to Italy before he leaves again.
3. Gianluca Scamacca – West Ham
The Hammers won the Europa Conference League and managed to avoid relegation, but the season was not easy. They fought hard in the last seats of the Premier League table and one of the main reasons was their inability to find the net regularly. Gianluca Scamacca was brought to London to solve the goalscoring problems, but he failed to impress, having just 3 goals in 16 appearances.
2. Kalvin Phillips – Man City
His transfer to Man City was one of the top stories last season, but Kalvin Phillips found it hard to keep up with what Pep Guardiola has in mind for a modern midfielder. He started only twice while Rodri was perfect throughout the entire campaign, scoring also in the Champions League final against Inter Milan. Guardiola knows how Phillips can fit into the rotation, so it is very early to write him off.
1. Richarlison – Tottenham
The Brazilian was a big-money addition for the Spurs last summer for a fee of £50 million. He seemed to be the missing part near Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son after setting his credential in top-tier football with Watford and Everton. But he scored just a single goal (against Liverpool at Anfield) leaving Tottenham fans frustrated in a terrible season for the club.

Chelsea’s signings were one of a kind because Todd Boehly seemed unable to find the balance in the transfer market, paying a huge amount of money on new entries in the club’s worst season in the modern era. There are many of them, but five names will leave our readers in awe.
5. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Aubameyang’s performances made it clear that his great time at Arsenal belongs to the past. His price was not big (Chelsea paid £10 million to Barcelona) but he netted one goal in 11 appearances. He was out of the squad completely by January and wasn’t even registered to play in Europe.
4. Joao Felix
The Portuguese star is identified as one of the most talented attackers through his presence in Lisbon with Benfica. He never felt comfortable in Simeone’s system in Madrid, so he and Chelsea thought that both would gain much through his six-month loan at Stamford Bridge. Receiving a red card in your debut is a bad omen, something that was entirely confirmed.
3. Kalidou Koulibaly
A defender who made every major Premier League club fight for his talents. Koulibaly was one of the best in his position during his time in Napoli. Chelsea decided to invest in him despite his age, paying a fee of £30 million, making his dream come true. He struggled a lot to follow the pace of the Premier League, being unable to justify all the noise around him. Todd Boehly sold him to Saudi side Al-Hilal.
2. Marc Cucurella
Buying a defender that is a constant attacking threat is always a plus. Cucurella started with great credentials after a great season in Brighton. Chelsea paid £66 million to his name as he was seen to be a great replacement for frequently injured Ben Chillwell. He brought no magic to London though, with his injury in the last matches of the season putting a completely negative tone to the first months in Chelsea’s shirt.
1. Mykhaylo Mudryk
We could not finish our list with the worst signing in European football, considering his price. Mykhaylo Mudryk had a couple of revealing months at the beginning of the season in Shakhtar Donetsk, especially in the Champions League group stage.
He made Chelsea and Arsenal enter a bidding war last January, dumping the North Londoners for the sake of the Blues. Putting pen to an eight-year-duration contract was part of the club’s new policy but with zero goals and a few chances created after, Mudryk needed more than just his undeniable talent to prove that he can be a star at this level. His one of the greatest prospects in the league so his future remains bright.
