The bookmakers have already started planning the odds for the Championship 2023/2024 campaign, knowing all the teams participating in the English second tier next season.
The huge favourite to win the league, finish first and gain the automatic promotion to the Premier League is of course Leicester City at 13/2. The former Premier League champions failed to impress this season under Brendan Rodgers and Dean Smith couldn’t save it for the Foxes. They may lose key players such as Youri Tielemans, but this squad’s talent flows, especially at the Championship level.
Southampton and Leeds United are second at 8/1. They were both relegated from the Premier League this season, after a poor outcome in those 38 matches which left them in the 20th and 19th seats respectively. The Saints will be playing Championship football for the first time since 2012, while Leeds return after the 2019/2020 campaign. Ruben Selles and Sam Allardyce couldn’t gain the respective amount of points to avoid relegation for both clubs.
Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough appointment transformed the team into a top-4 finisher and play-off participant. Carrick took a team which was 21st in the league last October and managed to enter the playoffs discussion as a favourite to win it all at Wembley, playing a very attacking football. Boro may have be beaten by Coventry in the semi-final, but the progress in the club took them to 17/2.
Ipswich finished second in League 1 with 98 points (Plymouth had 101) and the bookies back them high on the odds list at 10/1. Right behind are the so-called yo-yo clubs, Norwich (12/1) and Watford (14/1), clubs that had a terrible season despite the great players under their wings.
Play-off participants Sunderland are at 16/1, followed by Stoke City, newly promoted via League 1 play-offs Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom at 20/1.
It is always wise to keep in mind that the summer transfer window can change the odds and favoured one team or another.
