Manchester City are reportedly close to signing Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea, which might trigger a domino effect with transfers around English football. The most important of the… fallen pieces is Ilkay Gundogan. The Manchester City captain wants to join Barcelona and the club is ready to let him go if Mateo Kovacic’s transfer is completed.
There have already been talks between the two clubs about the possibility of a transfer this summer, but as of now, there has been no formal offer.
The Croatian’s contract is up in 12 months and he has notified Chelsea that he wants to look for a new club. So the Londoners might want to sell him now and get something, rather than letting him walk on a free next summer.
Kovacic joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in 2018 and since he has played 221 matches, scoring 6 goals. As a Chelsea player, the 29-year-old defensive midfielder has won both the Champions League (beating Manchester City in 2021) and the Europa League.
The progress in talks with Kovacic means that City are ready to part ways with Ilkay Gundogan. The club captain’s contract expires next month, Guardiola wants him to stay, but his desire is to play for Barcelona.
Last season City brought in Kalvin Phillips from Leeds, as a potential Gundogan replacement, but he only managed to start two Premier League matches. Now they will try to bring in Kovacic, banking on the fact that Chelsea need to sell players this summer to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.
