One of the most famous World Cup tales is that of the Miracle in Belo Horizonte when the USA beat England 1-0, on 29 June 1950. The urban legend has it that English newspapers reported that their team won 10-1, as they thought the message telegraphed was wrong. This is a hoax, but still, we are talking about one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. England vs USA lives again, as the two sides face each other in round 2 of the World Cup group stage.
England started the World Cup with a bang, beating Iran 6-2. As for the United States, the game against Wales started magnificently, but the team showed poor performance in the second half, of a game that ended in a 1-1 draw.

England team news
England was electric in their game against Iran. Star man Harry Kane did not score, but he did hand out two assists. Five different men managed to find the net in that match, including teenager Jude Bellingham, which means Southgate’s team has scoring solutions and they don’t have to rely on their striker to get on the scoreboard.
Kane hobbled off when we picked up a knock to his ankle, but he is deemed fit to play and will keep his position ahead of Callum Wilson.
One of the best players on the pitch was Harry Maguire. The Manchester United skipper might be out of favour at his club, but he was brilliant for England. He will most probably keep his position and so is Kieran Trippier, who despite having Trent Alexander-Arnold contending for the starting role at right-back.
It is expected that the Three Lions will maintain their formation for this England vs USA match, opting for a 4-3-3, with two centre-backs, instead of the 3-5-2 scheme Southgate was using in the qualifiers. John Stones and Harry Maguire will play in the centre of defence, while Eric Dier and Kyle Walker (who is ready after recovering from an injury) will be ready to be thrown in if needed. James Maddison is not yet fit, but he wasn’t expected to start either way.
USA team news
USA were dominant in the first half of their opening game against Wales. They led with Timothy Weah’s beautiful strike. But that goal, scored by the son of former Ballon d’Or winner and current President of Liberia, George Weah, was not enough. Wales was the team to command the pace in the second half of the game and the equaliser came with a penalty kick by (who else?) Gareth Bale.
Weston McKennie had some groin pain after the Wales match and Yunus Musah had to be replaced after hurting his toe. They both trained normally, but they are obviously questionable. As are Sergino Dest and Gio Reyna.
